Safe and Reliable Motoring
First, at this year's Geneva International Motor Show, and then in New York, Kia introduced its all-new never before seen

The whole notion of separate release dates and international debuts is just a not-so-subtle hint as to how Kia is planning to play its future cards in a big way. The South Korean firm, owned and controlled by that country's other automotive giant Hyundai, wants to project itself into the top five automobile manufacturers in the world by 2010. There's no better way to get the attention of the public than by releasing its cars to the right audience at the right time.
As with the Sportage SUV, the Spectra compact and the pocket-sized Picanto (not sold in North America), the Rio has been revamped

"The new Rio offers customers more space, more power, higher performance, better handling, a smoother ride and enhanced fuel economy," says Mr. Yong Hwan Kim, VP of Kia Motors. I'd say that's as good a start as any.
From the technical specifications list, the Rio5 doesn't appear to offer anything special. It rides on a

Regardless of how well it drives, the new Rio5 is already shaping up to be a much better vehicle in terms of its design. Space has been used more efficiently by reducing overhangs and creating a 'cab forward' body. At less than four metres (less than 157.8 inches) long, the new Rio5 is both shorter than the RX-V model it replaces, but also the 4.2 metre (165.4 inch)-long new-generation sedan. The more compact length sees a slight increase of width by 15 mm (0.6 inches) and a whopping growth in height and wheelbase length - an incredible 50 mm (2.0 inches) taller, and 90 mm

If the Rio5's styling may be familiar to you, this is because the production variant was previewed last September at the 2004 Paris show with the Sport concept. In the transformation to a production model, the concept's sleek, Lexus-like lines and toned figure may have been lost, but the general shape and profile have been maintained. Definitely taller, the Rio's facial details including the headlamps and grille have been stretched upwards, while the fascia is finished with black plastic rub strips instead of sleek, wrap-around LED appliqué.
Much the same can be said about the car's tail, which has also been toned down. The scalloped tailgate, deemed too bold for

Where the Sport Concept featured a high-performance 200-horsepower turbocharged engine, we regret to inform you that the mass-produced version will be offered with dramatically less-powerful motors. Kia will offer three engines - two gasoline powerplants, and a new common-rail turbodiesel motor. The diesel, developed by Hyundai, is a first for the Rio, and will be a vital component to its success in European markets. As usual, it's unlikely that we'll get this economical inline-four due to poor quality fuels and a general lack of demand.
As for petrol-power, Kia will serve up the Rio5 with a choice between a

As in the Spectra compact and Sportage SUV, Kia is taking passenger safety seriously. Aside from a more rigid structure, the

While the final specifications have yet to be confirmed, Kia will undoubtedly lead the pack of subcompacts with class-leading value, as it has been doing for quite some time now. While power amenities like windows, mirrors and keyless entry will probably be limited to the upscale models, the basic Rio5 will come with a decent array of standard features and one of the best comprehensive warranties in the business: 60 months / 100,000 km.
As of right now, Kia has not released any information as to when the Rio5 will

The new Rio5 may not be advanced and may not have badge prestige, but it will bring safe and reliable motoring to the masses, which should help it to be the most successful compact Korean car to date.

New Rio to be More Stylish, Sportier and Roomier than Predecessor

Yet despite being inexpensive it offers attractive styling and unexpected features for the subcompact class. While sales have been strong throughout its first five years on the market, an update is necessary to keep the tiny sedan at the forefront of the segment now dominated by the Toyota Echo Hatchback.
An all-new 2006 Kia Rio is

Teasing would-be buyers Kia released two official sketches yesterday, December 14, 2004, showing a much more stylish Rio. The changes will run more than just skin deep, however, having been completely redesigned from the tires up to the greenhouse, for a car Kia says features "a longer wheelbase, a wider track and more horsepower than its predecessor, providing better handling, a smoother ride and improved levels of performance."
In a press release Kia's Senior Executive Vice-President and COO Yong-Hwan Kim commented, "Building on the overwhelming success

The South Korean automaker also states that the 2006 Rio will also offer more room than the outgoing model inside, with greater front and rear legroom and higher levels of comfort overall.
The new design is based on Kia's Sport concept car that debuted at the Paris Motor Show in September of this year (see Concept archives under Kia for Oct 25, 2004: 2004 Kia Sport Concept), a racy looking subcompact hatch

In North America the 2006 Rio will get a 1.6-liter gasoline powered four-cylinder that Kia only says "boasts additional torque and horsepower compared to its predecessor." The current Rio features a 104-horsepower 16-valve, DOHC 1.6 liter engine, with 104 lb-ft of torque.
Being that Kia is wholly owned by Hyundai, when its Spectra was upgraded for this year the automaker chose to adopt the general architecture and drivetrain from the next-generation Elantra, to cut costs through economies of scale and arrive at a higher quality product more capable of fighting it out in the competitive C-segment.
While the new Spectra received the exact same engine as the current Elantra, which at 138-horsepower was deemed adequate to

| If the production 2006 Rio is similar to the concept, it should be a hit with the sport compact tuner crowd. (Photo: Kia Canada) |
Therefore, we can expect either a significantly upgraded or entirely new 1.6-liter engine, which will be shared between the Rio and Accent.
In Europe, base Rios will come with a 1.4 liter four-cylinder, with upgraded models receiving the 1.6. A diesel will also be available, displacing 1.5 liters. There is no mention of the diesel being offered in North America after 2006, when diesel fuel is to be upgraded in order to pass new, more stringent emissions standards.
Yet even with a single engine choice, as the car is offered now, it should be popular in Canada and the U.S.
"Kia is excited about the prospects of the new Rio as it offers a complete package of driving excitement, quality and value,

| If the new Rio will end up as attractive as the Sport concept the brand showed in Paris, it should do extremely well despite the competitive market segment. (Photo: Kia Canada) |
The B-segment, or subcompact class, is growing in Canada, mind you, with Chevrolet's new Korean-made Aveo stealing sales from Kia and Hyundai, and Toyota's new Echo Hatchback the segment sales leader. Suzuki also offers its Sprint+, based off the same Daewoo architecture as the Chevy Aveo, which also spawned the new Pontiac Wave.
Kia is a brand that most people consider good value, however, which in some ways gives it an advantage at the low end of the market. If the new Rio will end up as attractive as the Sport concept the brand showed in Paris, it should do extremely well despite the competitive market segment.
